Nvidia is backing a massive artificial intelligence infrastructure development in Ohio that could ultimately require at least 10 gigawatts of new power generation, underscoring the rapidly growing impact of AI data centers on U.S. electricity demand.

The chipmaker said it has partnered with SB Energy to secure land, power and data center shell capacity at the PORTS-Pike Technology Campus in Pike County, Ohio, where OpenAI will be the customer under a 20-year lease.

The first phase is designed to provide 4.25 gigawatts of IT capacity, with Nvidia holding an option covering another 3.75 GW. At full buildout, the project would provide 8 GW of AI computing capacity.

SB Energy, which is backed by Japan's SoftBank Group and OpenAI, will build, own and operate the data center infrastructure. Nvidia will exclusively supply the site's AI computing systems, including GPUs, CPUs and networking equipment through its DSX AI factory platform.

The planned scale of the development highlights the increasingly close relationship between AI infrastructure and the energy sector. SB Energy and SoftBank plan to develop at least 10 GW of new electricity generation to support the campus and invest at least $4.2 billion in regional grid infrastructure through a partnership with AEP Ohio.

The companies said the arrangement is structured to prevent the costs of serving the data center campus from being shifted onto existing electricity customers.

Development is expected to proceed in phases beginning in 2028.

The campus is being built around the former Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant, a major Cold War-era uranium enrichment site in southern Ohio. The developers are working with AEP Ohio as well as the U.S. Departments of Energy and Commerce to redevelop the area into a large-scale technology and power hub.

Nvidia will also invest $1.5 billion directly in SB Energy, joining SoftBank and OpenAI as investors in the infrastructure company. The funding will support SB Energy's broader expansion as demand grows for purpose-built electricity and data center infrastructure serving AI computing.

The project adds to a wave of multibillion-dollar data center developments that are transforming U.S. power demand forecasts. Hyperscalers and AI companies are increasingly seeking dedicated generation, transmission capacity and long-term power arrangements as access to electricity becomes one of the principal constraints on new computing capacity.

The PORTS-Pike development is particularly notable for its scale: 10 GW of generation capacity would be comparable to the output of several large nuclear power stations and represents a major new source of electricity demand concentrated at a single industrial site.

Story Continues

The developers also plan significant local investment. OpenAI has added $40 million to an existing $40 million community benefits fund established by SB Energy, bringing the initial fund to $80 million. The money is intended for programs including energy affordability, workforce development and regional economic development.

The companies said the project could ultimately support tens of thousands of jobs in Ohio.

(Bloomberg) -- Meta Platforms Inc. is headed to court Tuesday for a high-stakes showdown with a coalition of state attorneys general over claims that the company deliberately designed Facebook and Instagram to encourage compulsive use among young users.

In a case that carries enormous risk for one of the world's most valuable tech companies, the top legal officers of 29 states are seeking not only massive financial penalties, but also court orders that could force Meta to change how it operates its platforms.

The jury trial in federal court in Oakland, California, comes as social media companies are facing a global backlash over concerns that they profit at the expense of young users, for whom a growing body of research shows that heavy use of the algorithm-driven platforms can be dangerously unhealthy.

While authorities in Australia and Europe have enacted or proposed outright bans for youths in the last year, legislative crackdowns in the US have had limited success, turning the courts into a pivotal battleground.

The Meta trial is especially momentous because it's focused on alleged violations of state consumer protection and federal privacy laws — which carry fines of as much as $20,000 per violation that can add up quickly when multiplied by millions of young Instagram and Facebook users.

By Meta's own calculations, if it loses the trial it could face penalties of as much as $1.4 trillion, an amount close to its market capitalization and unheard of in the annals of legal history.

"The stakes could not be higher in this case," said Eric Goldman, a professor at Santa Clara University Law School who specializes in internet law.

While the attorneys general have not publicly disclosed exactly how much they're seeking in penalties, Megan O'Neill, a lawyer for California, put the figure closer to $193 billion during a court hearing last week, while suggesting that Meta was pointing to the highest theoretical amount for "shock value."

Even the lower amount would be among the largest ever litigation payouts, comparable to the $206 billion settlement that state attorneys general struck with tobacco companies over cigarette addiction in 1998.

Potential Exposure

Story Continues

Other social media giants — like Alphabet Inc.'s Google, Snap Inc. and TikTok — are not part of this trial. But like Meta, they all face billions of dollars in potential exposure from more than 3,000 personal injury claims by individuals and families in the US, and about 1,300 more lawsuits by public school districts across the nation. Some of the cases have already settled, avoiding trials, while more bellwether cases loom in the months ahead.

The lawyers behind the cases have gained traction in court by arguing that the products themselves — through their design and functionality — have created harms, rather than taking at aim at content, for which platforms are broadly protected from liability.

This strategy, several years in the making, succeeded in its first test when a Los Angeles jury in March awarded $6 million to a 20-year-old woman who said her nonstop use for more than a decade of sites including Meta's Instagram and Google's YouTube caused her to suffer anxiety, depression and body dysmorphia.

'Outlandish Payout'

Meta has denied the states' allegations, and accused the attorneys general of seeking unreasonable design changes and an "outlandish payout."

At the trial, the jury will be serving only in an advisory capacity. US District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers ultimately will decide whether Meta is liable for wrongdoing, and if so, what penalty and remedies to impose.

The attorneys general spearheading the case, from California, Colorado, Kentucky and New Jersey, allege under their separate state laws that Meta knowingly designed features that encouraged compulsive and prolonged use of its platforms by young people, while simultaneously misleading consumers about safety features on its platforms.

The broader bipartisan group of 29 states accuse the company of collecting data from users under 13 years old in violation of the federal Children's Online Privacy Protection Act.

Younger Users

In addition to seeking an order requiring Meta to restrict younger users on its platforms, the states seek to force the company to remove allegedly addictive features like infinite scroll and its content recommendation systems.

"We are ready to hold Meta accountable for its role in fueling the mental health crisis of American children and look forward to trial," California Attorney General Rob Bonta, a Democrat, said in a statement.

Meta said in a statement that while the AGs tout the case as a landmark, "their limited claims are unsubstantiated and their financial demands are vastly disproportionate."

"The AGs offer no proof anyone in their states was misled, claim benign features like having an additional Instagram account somehow harmed their residents, and attempt to penalize Meta for industry-wide challenges like age verification," according to the company.

BI Litigation Watch: Social-Media Addiction Suits

Key Dates in the Litigation

After opening statements Tuesday, the trial is expected to take about five weeks. Meta co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg and Instagram head Adam Mosseri are lined up to testify, as are dozens of other witnesses including current and former Meta employees as well as experts in the fields of technology and psychology.

The trial comes on the heels of a nearly $1 billion hit for Meta in a case brought by New Mexico's attorney general.

A state court judge in Santa Fe likened Meta to a polluting factory and ordered the company to make platform changes, including time limits for usage and push notifications for young users. Meta was ordered to pay roughly $375 million in civil fines and $567 million to ameliorate social media harms to youths in the state.

'Public Nuisance'

The ruling was a significant test of the legal theory behind the attorney general cases: social media companies are a "public nuisance" that harm the general public. The same theory was used in earlier public-health litigation against Big Tobacco and opioid manufacturers.

Meta Faces Big Tobacco Moment in AG Trial: Tech In Depth

The case in Oakland will test a similar legal argument, this time in federal court and on behalf of multiple states.

Meta was unsuccessful last week in its emergency request to an appeals court to postpone the trial. The company argued that the trial should wait for the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals to resolve whether the claims by the attorneys general are foreclosed by Section 230 of the federal Communications Decency Act, which provides a broad legal shield for lawsuits against internet platforms.

About 14 other states are separately pursuing social media harm cases against Meta in their own state courts. A trial in Tennessee's case is close to wrapping up in Nashville.

Minda Smiley, a senior analyst at Emarketer focused on social media, said the prospect of a penalty in excess of a trillion dollars "is more symbolic at this point."

"It's representative of the gravity of the claims Meta faces," she said. "It's becoming clear that these lawsuits could have a material impact on not only Meta's business, but how its platforms fundamentally operate."

The case is People of the State of California v. Meta Platforms Inc., 23-cv-05448, US District Court, Northern District of California (Oakland).

Stocks initially found support on Monday amid strength in technology stocks after stellar revenue growth at Anthropic PBC bolstered the view that spending on artificial intelligence will be sustained. Anthropic told prospective investors that its Q2 revenue jumped by at least 14-fold from the same period last year, according to a report today by Bloomberg.  However, the weakness in software stocks is weighing on the Dow Jones Industrial Average.

Stocks also found support on some better-than-expected US economic news.  The Aug Empire manufacturing survey general business conditions index unexpectedly rose +5.0 to a 4.5-year high of 20.6, stronger than expectations of a decline to 10.0.  Also, the Aug NAHB housing market index unexpectedly rose +1 to 35, stronger than expectations of a decline to 33.

Signs of weakness in China's economy undercut global growth prospects and were negative for stocks.  China's July industrial production rose +4.5% y/y, weaker than expectations of +5.0% y/y.  Also, China's July retail sales rose +0.6% y/y, weaker than expectations of +1.5% y/y. In addition, the China July survey jobless rate rose +0.2 to 5.2%, showing a weaker labor market than expectations of 5.1%.  Finally, China's July new home prices fell -0.18% m/m, the thirty-eighth consecutive month home prices have declined.

Story Continues

Sep WTI crude oil prices (CLU26) rallied more than +2% on Monday to a 3-week high amid fresh Israeli attacks on Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon, dampening the prospects of ending hostilities in the Middle East and a quick reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.  Also, Israel has struck Iran-backed Hamas in Gaza, the Yemen- based Houthis have attacked ships in the Red Sea, and several vessels have been hit by projectiles in the Strait of Hormuz.  President Trump said today that the US naval blockade on Iranian ports is putting pressure on the country, and he has no timeline for resolving the US-Iran conflict.

Crude prices raced to their high on Monday after US Energy Secretary Chris Wright said that the US is playing the long game with Iran, implying the US has no plans for de-escalation of the conflict, potentially limiting crude supplied from the Middle East.

Iran and Oman appear to be edging closer to a deal on how the Strait of Hormuz should be managed, agreeing on routes through the waterway. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Baghaei said on Monday that finalizing a "shipping map" is part of a broader accord to govern traffic through the strait and constitutes an independent arrangement between the two states that will uphold their sovereignty and ensure the safe transit of vessels.

Treasury Secretary Bessent said last week that the administration will soon announce unprecedented economic measures against Iran that "have never been seen in the history of economic isolation of a country."  The economic measures would add to the current US naval blockade of Iranian ports.

There have been no signs of progress toward a US-Iran agreement to fully open the Strait of Hormuz.  An Iranian military spokesperson said last Thursday that no ship can safely pass the Strait of Hormuz without Iran's authorization and supervision and that President Trump's claims of control over the Strait are "nothing more than lies."  The Iranian statement was in response to President Trump's comment last Tuesday that the US has "total control over the Hormuz Strait" and that "we own it."

The outlook for strong Q2 earnings is a bullish factor for stocks. The S&P 500 is tracking for earnings growth of almost 32% in Q2, well above projections of +23%, and nearly four times the average earnings growth rate outside of the Covid period since Q4 of 2013, according to Bloomberg Intelligence.  AI spending is expected to account for most of earnings, with AI infrastructure stocks set to contribute nearly 60% of the S&P 500's earnings-per-share growth in Q2.  So far, earnings results have been positive, with 85% of the 456 S&P 500 companies that have reported Q2 earnings beating estimates, according to Bloomberg data.

The markets are discounting a 36% chance of a +25 bp rate hike at the next FOMC meeting on September 15-16.

Overseas stock markets settled mixed on Monday.  The Euro Stoxx 50 closed down -0.14%.  China's Shanghai Composite climbed to a 5-week high and closed up +1.41%.  Japan's Nikkei-225 Stock Average closed up +0.74%.

Interest Rates

September 10-year T-notes (ZNU6) closed down -4 ticks on Monday.  The 10-year T-note yield rose up +3.2 bp to 4.724%.  T-notes came under pressure on Monday after WTI crude oil prices rose more than +2% to a 3-week high, which boosted inflation expectations.  The 10-year breakeven inflation rate rose to a 3-week high of 2.296% on Monday.  Also, Monday's stronger-than-expected US economic news on the Aug Empire manufacturing index and Aug NAHB housing market index weighed on T-note prices.

European government bond yields moved higher on Monday.  The 10-year German bund yield rose to a 15-year high of 3.223% and finished up +1.7 bp to 3.221%.  The 10-year UK gilt yield climbed to a 3-week high of 5.063% and finished up +2.3 bp to 5.060%.

Markets are discounting a 94% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on September 10.

US Stock Movers

  • NVIDIA runs a structurally similar $500B financing plan with Blackstone and Apollo, but escaped Friday's selloff because no specific debt figure was attached.
  • AMD's put-to-call ratio sits at 1.15 and its money flow ranks last among 10 chip names, signaling that options traders are hedging gains, not chasing the rally.

Broadcom 's ( NASDAQ:AVGO ) stock is sinking 6% to $390.69 in early Friday afternoon trading, while Advanced Micro Devices ( NASDAQ:AMD ) stock is climbing 4% to $502.95. The split reaction within a single AI theme reveals opposing verdicts on how AI infrastructure gets financed.

Justin Sullivan / Getty Images A Bank of America ( NYSE:BAC ) note flagged a $370 billion estimate tied to Broadcom's off-balance-sheet financing vehicle, while Baird issued a Street-high price target on AMD's accelerator roadmap. Year-to-date through Thursday's close, Broadcom stock was up 21% and Advanced Micro Devices stock was up 126%.

Broadcom Slides on AI Debt Vehicle Estimate

Bank of America analyst Tom Curcuruto flagged that Broadcom's chip-financing vehicle could reach $370 billion of senior debt by mid-2029 at 20-gigawatt scale, including roughly $150 billion of new issuance in 2027 alone. Per Broadcom's latest 10-Q, an investor partner assumed the purchase and lease agreements, and Broadcom agreed to backstop lease payments for five years, with maximum exposure of up to $29 billion on the initial transaction.

SoFi Active Invest is offering a limited-time promotion. Open an account, fund it with $50 or more, and you could receive up to $3,000 in complimentary stock for Active Invest accounts. See for yourself by clicking here now.

The $370 billion isn't Broadcom's debt; the vehicle raises capital and leases custom AI accelerators to customers. Broadcom's fiscal Q2 2026 revenue was $22.19 billion, up 47.9% year over year, with AI chip revenue up 143%, and management has guided to $16 billion of AI semiconductor revenue for the current quarter. Polymarket traders give Broadcom a 94% chance of topping $15 billion in AI revenue this quarter and a 78% chance of exceeding $16 billion, and today's selloff targets the financing structure rather than underlying demand.

AMD Rallies on Baird's Street-High $1,250 Call

Story Continues

Baird analyst Tristan Gerra doubled his AMD price target to a Street-high $1,250 from $625 while maintaining Outperform. His model implies AMD AI GPU platform revenue reaching $147 billion by 2030 on 15% share of the data center AI accelerator TAM. Bank of America raised its 2030 server CPU market forecast to more than $210 billion, up from $170 billion this week and kept Advanced Micro Devices as its top pick.

Advanced Micro Devices stock initially fell after the Aug. 4 Q2 2026 report despite revenue of $11.54 billion, up 50.1% year over year, with Data Center revenue more than doubling to $6.72 billion. The culprit was flat gross margin guidance of 56% for Q3 2026. Per prior 24/7 Wall St. coverage, the post-earnings drop was 9%.

AMD's put-to-call open interest ratio has climbed to 1.15, and its 20-day Chaikin Money Flow reads -0.142, the weakest of 10 major chip names, while NVIDIA ( NASDAQ:NVDA ), Broadcom, Taiwan Semiconductor ( NYSE:TSM ) and Qualcomm ( NASDAQ:QCOM ) show accumulation. Options positioning hedges AMD even as sell-side targets rise.

Sector Move Confirms a Single-Name Story

Intel ( NASDAQ:INTC ) stock is down 2%, and the iShares Semiconductor ETF ( NASDAQ:SOXX ) is down 0.7%. A broad semiconductor fund barely moving while Broadcom stock falls 6% and AMD stock rises 4% confirms that today is a repricing of individual balance sheets and analyst calls rather than the broader AI trade.

NVIDIA went public this week with a plan to collectively finance AI computing deals totaling roughly $500 billion, alongside Goldman Sachs ( NYSE:GS ), Blackstone ( NYSE:BX ) and Apollo Global Management ( NYSE:APO ), with KKR ( NYSE:KKR ), BlackRock ( NYSE:BLK ) and Brookfield ( NYSE:BN ) added days before. Jensen Huang clarified that NVIDIA's support would cover as much as 25% of an opportunity, and no deals were signed at the time of the announcement. Broadcom's structurally similar arrangement, anchored by Apollo and Blackstone, got a number attached Friday and the stock fell.

Broadcom's vehicle launched in June when Apollo and Blackstone led a $35 billion financing for Broadcom's AI XPV Platform. That deal funds more than 1 gigawatt of compute for Anthropic, with the platform sized to support more than 20 gigawatts for frontier AI labs through 2028. Blackstone has already sounded out investors for another transaction exceeding $30 billion.

What Investors Can Watch Next

Investors can watch for whether Broadcom's backstop exposure grows beyond the disclosed $29 billion as the AI XPV Platform scales toward 20 gigawatts. They can also check to see if NVIDIA's $500 billion framework converts into signed contracts, since none were in place at announcement.

Additionally, traders may want to look for signs of AMD's elevated put open interest unwinding without a price breakdown, suggesting hedgers were protecting gains rather than exiting. The key question is whether the market treats vendor-backstopped AI financing as reassurance for one company and risk for another. Investors should size their positions carefully given how quickly narratives around AI leverage are shifting.

What Happened?

A number of stocks jumped in the afternoon session after Bloomberg reported that Anthropic told prospective investors its second-quarter revenue jumped more than 14-fold.

Anthropic reported preliminary second-quarter revenue of more than $11.5 billion, versus $787 million a year earlier and $4.73 billion in the first quarter according to Bloomberg. The company also  showed positive adjusted operating income for the first time. Bloomberg said the figures could still be revised.Chip stocks are a leveraged bet on whether AI labs can keep paying for GPUs, memory, and storage. If Anthropic could more than double sequential sales, and no longer run an adjusted operating loss, this could be evidence that there is sufficient demand to fund that spend.

Reuters separately reported, citing two people familiar with the company's financials, that Anthropic is projecting 2028 revenue of roughly $190 billion to $200 billion. That could explain why memory and NAND names led the rebound during the session: serving that many queries consumes DRAM and storage, not only training chips.

Chip stocks followed the memory-led rally as Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told The Wall Street Journal the Trump administration opposes Apple buying Chinese memory chips. Lutnick said Washington is "not in favor" of Apple using Chinese memory and that he had conveyed that "plainly," a message that would keep more of the shortage with Micron, Samsung, and SK hynix.

The stock market overreacts to news, and big price drops can present good opportunities to buy high-quality stocks.

Among others, the following stocks were impacted:

  • Semiconductor Manufacturing company Marvell Technology(NASDAQ:MRVL) jumped 5.8%.Is now the time to buy Marvell Technology? Access our full analysis report here, it's free.
  • Semiconductor Manufacturing company FormFactor(NASDAQ:FORM) jumped 5.4%.Is now the time to buy FormFactor? Access our full analysis report here, it's free.
  • Semiconductor Manufacturing company Applied Materials(NASDAQ:AMAT) jumped 5.9%.Is now the time to buy Applied Materials? Access our full analysis report here, it's free.

Zooming In On Applied Materials (AMAT)

Applied Materials's shares are extremely volatile and have had 37 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today's move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The previous big move we wrote about was 5 days ago when the stock gained 5% on the news that a wave of upbeat earnings reports and bullish forecasts from key industry players signaled robust and sustained demand for artificial intelligence technology.

Story Continues

The rally was sparked by strong quarterly results from several AI-related firms, reinforcing investor confidence in the sector. Super Micro Computer, a seller of servers and other AI equipment, saw its shares jump after its earnings per share came in 84% higher than expected and it provided a revenue forecast that topped estimates.

Similarly, CoreWeave, which provides cloud computing for AI systems, rallied after its sales forecast also exceeded expectations. This positive sentiment echoed globally, with Asian markets gaining as traders bought into AI- and semiconductor-related shares. The optimism is further supported by fundamental data, such as a reported 155% year-over-year surge in South Korea's semiconductor exports for early August.AI racks consume GPUs, CPUs, high-bandwidth memory, and storage.

When a large server OEM and a major AI cloud operator both lift the path of future shipments, investors typically reprice the chip makers that supply those systems which helps explain the gains in Nvidia, AMD, and Intel.

Applied Materials is up 99% since the beginning of the year, but at $535.03 per share, it is still trading 26% below its 52-week high of $723 from June 2026. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Applied Materials's shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $4,155.

ALSO WORTH WATCHING: Nvidia's Quiet Partner. Nvidia's chips cost a hundred grand. The connectors that make them work cost even more. One company makes them all.

Every AI server needs specialized infrastructure the chip companies don't make. High-speed cables. Power connectors. Thermal sensors. This 90-year-old company built a monopoly on it. The AI boom just started. This stock is still flying under the radar. Claim The Stock Ticker Here for FREE .

USA Rare Earth Just Shifted From Building to Delivering. Here's What That Means for the Stock.

-3.55%

For the past several years, USA Rare Earth (NASDAQ: USAR) has focused on financing projects, building manufacturing capacity, and assembling a domestic rare-earth supply chain. Those investments are finally beginning to produce commercial products, which means the market can now evaluate the company based on production, customer demand, and revenue growth rather than construction milestones.

USA Rare Earth recently commissioned the first phase of its commercial magnet production line at its facility in Stillwater, Oklahoma, enabling the company to begin fulfilling customer orders for its permanent magnets. Management says the facility represents the first new large-scale U.S. rare-earth magnet manufacturing plant in decades. Those magnets, by the way, are used in electric vehicles, robotics , aerospace, defense systems, and AI-related infrastructure. These are all industries that will be in high demand for the foreseeable future.

Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »

Here's what this could all mean for USA Rare Earth and the stock going forward.

Moving beyond the mine

When it comes to rare-earth companies , mining alone captures only a portion of the industry's economics. In fact, the higher-value opportunity actually lies in processing rare-earth oxides and manufacturing permanent magnets. China still dominates much of that supply chain, making domestic production a strategic priority for both governments and manufacturers. USA Rare Earth is trying to build that entire value chain.

Image source: Getty Images. In addition to its Oklahoma magnet facility, the company continues advancing development of its Round Top rare-earth project in Texas while expanding processing capabilities through strategic investments, including its recently completed investment in French rare-earth processor Carester. That partnership gives USA Rare Earth additional access to separation capacity while strengthening its position in the global supply chain.

The company also remains well-capitalized, with a balance sheet providing a decent amount of flexibility. USA Rare Earth ended the second quarter with approximately $1.53 billion in cash and cash equivalents. During the quarter, the company also finalized agreements with the U.S. Department of Commerce for access to up to $1.6 billion in CHIPS Act funding.

Story Continues

Management says that this capital will support the continued ramp-up of its Stillwater magnet facility, construction of a new magnet and metals manufacturing operation in South Carolina, and ongoing development of the Round Top rare-earth project.

Of course, that doesn't mean the hard part is over. Commercial manufacturing is very different from building a facility. We now need to see consistent production volumes, customer wins, and growing revenue, rather than simply new construction announcements.

What will drive the stock

Demand does appear to be working in the company's favor. Electric vehicles, humanoid robots, wind turbines, military equipment, and AI data centers all rely on high-performance permanent magnets. At the same time, the U.S. and Europe continue investing billions of dollars to reduce dependence on China's rare-earth supply chain. That creates a favorable backdrop for companies capable of producing magnets outside China.

Until recently, buying USA Rare Earth largely meant betting that management could finance and build a domestic rare-earth business. Now the focus shifts to whether the company can successfully manufacture, deliver, and scale commercial production. That's a much more measurable business.

The stock will almost certainly remain volatile as production ramps. But each commercial shipment, customer agreement, and increase in manufacturing output provides another data point you can use to evaluate execution. After years spent building the business, USA Rare Earth is finally entering the phase where results, not construction updates, are likely to drive the stock.

Will Nebius' Asset-Light Model Drive Further Margin Expansion in 2027?

Shivangi Deora

Mon, August 17, 2026 at 8:45 PM GMT+8 4 min read

  • NBIS

-3.18%

Nebius Group N.V. NBIS is entering 2027 with a business model designed to scale capacity while increasing profitability. In the second quarter of 2026, the company generated Group revenue of $582 million, up 454% year over year, while annualized run-rate revenue reached $3 billion. Group adjusted EBITDA was $236 million, resulting in an adjusted EBITDA margin of 41%, compared with 32% in the first quarter. The Nebius AI business generated a 50% adjusted EBITDA margin. On the last earnings call, management highlighted that the increase in profitability was supported by higher revenue, the early contribution of the asset-light model, Token Factory and recent acquisitions.

The asset-light model could provide an additional path for Nebius to expand capacity without requiring significant balance sheet capital. Under this model, partners finance, build and operate facilities, while Nebius provides its full-stack platform, demand and value-added services on top of the partners' infrastructure. On the last earnings call, management noted that this approach delivers high-margin revenue while requiring minimum balance sheet capital and has the potential to unlock additional capacity in 2027 and beyond. The company also stated that it had received dozens of inquiries from potential partners with significant capacity and capital but without the technology or market access needed to monetize it.

Management expects margin expansion to continue beyond 2026. The company has visibility into pricing and expects capacity coming online from its own data centers to begin improving margins in the second half of 2027. In addition, Nebius expects the asset-light model, along with high-value services such as agentic and inference solutions, to contribute an increasing share of revenue while supporting even higher margins.

For 2026, Nebius reaffirmed annualized run-rate revenue guidance of $7 billion to $9 billion, Group revenue of $3 billion to $3.4 billion, Group adjusted EBITDA margin of approximately 40% and capital expenditures of $20 billion to $25 billion. The company expects to deploy significantly more capacity in 2027, while 2027 formal guidance will be provided later this year.

Taking a Look at NBIS' Competitors

CoreWeave 's CRWV margins expanded in the second quarter as scale increasingly translated into operating leverage. Adjusted EBITDA was $1.5 billion, with an adjusted EBITDA margin of 59%, while adjusted operating income increased to $128 million from $21 million in the prior quarter, resulting in a 5% adjusted operating margin despite significant ramp costs. Management highlighted that new contracts signed in the second quarter carried contribution margins 5-10 percentage points above those added in recent quarters. Margin-accretive businesses, including storage, CPU, networking and software, exceeded $400 million in ARR. The company expects margins to continue expanding sequentially in the third and fourth quarters, with adjusted operating margins reaching the low teens in the fourth quarter.

Story Continues

Microsoft MSFT capitalizes on AI business momentum and Copilot adoption alongside accelerating Azure cloud infrastructure expansion. Strong Microsoft 365 Commercial cloud demand has been propelling Productivity and Business Processes revenue growth. ARPU is increasing through E5 and M365 Copilot uptake across key segments. Strategic execution through expanding scale and enterprise customer growth is driving non-AI services. The company reported fourth-quarter fiscal 2026 revenues of $90 billion, which increased 18% year over year. Gross margin reached $60.5 billion, up about 15% year over year. For the first quarter of fiscal 2027, Microsoft expects total company revenues between $89.85 billion and $90.95 billion, suggesting growth of roughly 16% to 17%.

Circle

Wrapped Bitcoin War Heats Up as Circle Pitches cirBTC as Neutral Infrastructure Key Takeaways

  • Circle is positioning cirBTC as neutral wrapped Bitcoin infrastructure, arguing it has no competing exchange, DEX, or lending protocol.
  • cirBTC remains tiny, with about 40 tokens outstanding, compared with 116,499 WBTC and 95,492 cbBTC in recent reserve disclosures.
  • Circle's challenge is turning its transparency and neutrality pitch into DeFi liquidity and institutional adoption.

Competition to bring Bitcoin into DeFi is intensifying as Circle attempts to differentiate cirBTC from established rivals WBTC and Coinbase's cbBTC with a pitch centered on institutional neutrality.

Circle launched cirBTC on Ethereum on June 8 as a token backed 1:1 by native Bitcoin held in segregated custody. The company argues wrapped Bitcoin should function as infrastructure rather than serve the interests of the platform issuing it.

Its definition of neutrality is specific: Circle does not operate a centralized exchange, decentralized exchange, or lending protocol that directly competes for the trading and lending activity generated by cirBTC. That contrasts most clearly with Coinbase, whose cbBTC connects directly with Coinbase accounts and its Base ecosystem.

cirBTC Faces a Massive Adoption Gap

Circle's bigger problem is scale. Its latest published reserve data, dated July 28, showed just 40.02 cirBTC in circulation, backed by 42.47 BTC.

By comparison, WBTC's reserve monitor showed 116,499 WBTC circulating against 116,514 BTC in reserves on July 29. Coinbase reported 95,492 cbBTC outstanding against 95,503 BTC in reserves as of July 31, with supply spread across Ethereum, Base, Solana, and Arbitrum.

That leaves cirBTC at a fraction of the scale of either major centralized competitor.

Circle is trying to compete partly on transparency. cirBTC reserves can be monitored using Chainlink Proof of Reserve , while the underlying Bitcoin addresses are publicly disclosed. The token is initially live on Ethereum, with Arc and broader multichain support planned.

Aave Could Become an Important Test

DeFi integration will determine whether the neutrality argument translates into demand.

Aave Labs has proposed adding cirBTC as collateral to its V3 and V4 Core markets. However, a June risk assessment stopped short of unconditional support, citing the token's limited liquidity alongside concerns including centralized administrative controls and upgrade permissions.

The contrast with cbBTC is significant. By late June, 18,917 cbBTC had already been supplied to Aave V3 Core, filling 99.6% of its then-19,000-token supply cap and prompting a recommendation to raise the limit.

Story Continues

Circle has therefore entered a wrapped Bitcoin market with a credible institutional brand and a distinct neutrality argument, but little liquidity so far. The wrapped Bitcoin war will ultimately be decided less by who holds the BTC than by which wrapper DeFi markets actually choose to use as collateral.
