Circle’s USDC volume jumps 151%, but revenue tells different story

Circle Internet Group ( CRCL ) issues USDC, a stablecoin designed to maintain a value of $1.

The company earns most of its revenue from interest on the reserve assets backing the USDC in circulation.

Circle said USDC onchain transaction volume reached $14.8 trillion during the second quarter, an increase of 151% from a year earlier .

Total revenue and reserve income increased only 7% to $701.3 million .

Circle reported earnings of 18 cents per share, above Wall Street estimates, but revenue and reserve income missed the consensus estimate of $717.5 million.

Circle's stock price was flat at 3 pm EDT on Aug. 5 after investors weighed an earnings beat against a revenue miss. Circle shares had fallen nearly 4% in early trading after the results were released.

Reserve income rose 5% to $668 million .

A 25% increase in average USDC circulation was partly offset by a 66-basis-point decline in Circle's reserve return rate to 3.5% .

Circle's disclosed transaction revenue comes from services including stablecoin redemptions, blockchain rewards and use of its own infrastructure. It does not receive a fee tied to every USDC transfer recorded on a public blockchain.

The results distinguish two measurements that can appear similar: the amount of USDC moving across blockchains and the revenue Circle earns from the assets and services that support it.

Related: Fed hold leaves Circle's key profit question unanswered

USDC transfers do not directly become Circle revenue

Onchain transaction volume measures the total USDC value transferred across Circle-supported blockchains during the quarter.

The figure does not represent unique dollars or unique users.

A single USDC can contribute to the total each time it moves between wallets, exchanges, or blockchain applications.

Circle reports several different measurements for its stablecoin business:

  • $14.8 trillion : USDC onchain transaction volume, up 151%.
  • $73.3 billion : USDC in circulation at the end of the quarter, up 19%.
  • $76.5 billion : Average USDC in circulation during the quarter, up 25%.
  • 3.5% : Reserve return rate, down 66 basis points.
  • $668 million : Reserve income, up 5%.
  • $701.3 million : Total revenue and reserve income, up 7%.

Circle's quarter-end figure measures the amount of USDC that remained outstanding on June 30.

The average-circulation figure measures the daily average during the quarter and is more important for reserve income because it determines the average amount of assets Circle can invest.

The 25% increase gave Circle a larger reserve balance on which to earn interest.

Story Continues

The decline in reserve yields limited the resulting income growth to 5%.

Circle, therefore, needs average USDC balances to rise fast enough to offset any further decline in the yield earned on its reserves.

Coinbase payments and other distribution costs limit what Circle keeps

Circle pays cryptocurrency platforms and other partners to distribute USDC and support its liquidity .

Circle's annual report says distribution costs paid to Coinbase and Binance are affected by the amount of USDC held on their platforms.

Under Circle's agreement with Coinbase ( COIN ), payments are tied principally to USDC net reserve income.

Circle retains an issuer portion, and the two companies receive allocations based on the amount of USDC held on their respective platforms.

After certain third-party payments, Coinbase also receives half of the remaining income tied to USDC circulating elsewhere in the ecosystem.

Circle recorded $412 million in distribution, transaction, and other costs during the second quarter, up 1% from a year earlier.

After subtracting those costs, Circle reported $289 million in revenue less distribution costs, or RLDC , up 15%.

Its RLDC margin increased to 41% from 38% .

A 41% RLDC margin means Circle retained about 41 cents before operating expenses from each dollar of total revenue and reserve income.

USDC growth through paid distribution channels can increase circulation, but those arrangements also increase the payments Circle makes to its partners.

Growth through channels that do not require third-party incentives could allow Circle to retain a larger share of its revenue.

Arc has to add recurring revenue beyond reserve interest

Circle generated $34 million in other revenue during the second quarter, up 41% from a year earlier.

The increase came primarily from subscription and services revenue.

Other revenue still accounted for less than 5% of Circle's quarterly total.

Circle raised its 2026 other-revenue forecast from $150 million to $170 million to a new range of $310 million to $330 million .

The revised forecast includes revenue that Circle has already recognized from the presale of tokens connected with Arc, its planned blockchain network.

Token presale revenue differs from recurring subscription or transaction revenue because the same sale does not repeat each quarter.

Circle plans to launch Arc's public mainnet on Sept. 16 .

The network has more than 100 institutional and ecosystem builders and is expected to include privacy features, support for tokenized financial assets, and an agent stack for programmable finance.

Artificial intelligence agents could use that infrastructure to make payments and purchase digital services with USDC.

Circle's adjusted operating expenses increased 23% to $146 million as the company invested in product development, infrastructure and artificial intelligence capabilities.

Arc will reduce Circle's dependence on reserve income only if the network begins producing recurring infrastructure, subscription, or transaction fees.

Related: Bank of America doubles down on Micron stock price for 2026

Lower rates are not Circle's only risk

Another decline in short-term interest rates would reduce the yield Circle earns on USDC reserves.

Average USDC circulation would have to continue increasing to offset that pressure.

Circle says the relationship between interest rates and USDC circulation is difficult to predict because higher or lower rates can change how investors use stablecoins and other financial assets.

The mix of USDC growth also affects Circle's margins.

USDC held through Coinbase, Binance, and other paid distribution arrangements can increase the fees Circle owes those partners.

Circle's RLDC margin could decline if those payments grow faster than its reserve and service revenue.

Arc presents a separate execution risk.

Circle must launch the network on schedule, attract continuing financial activity, and prevent cybersecurity or governance problems.

The company's own risk disclosures identify launch timing, ecosystem adoption, validator governance, token price volatility , and regulatory uncertainty as potential obstacles.

Circle's third-quarter results will show whether average USDC circulation rises above $76.5 billion , whether the reserve return rate falls below 3.5% , and whether RLDC margin remains within the revised full-year range of 41.7% to 43.7% .

After Arc launches Sept. 16, investors can compare the network's recurring service revenue with the token presale revenue already included in Circle's 2026 forecast.

"GF delivered strong results in the second quarter, with revenue and Non-IFRS gross margin exceeding the high end of our guidance ranges," said Tim Breen, CEO of GlobalFoundries. "We continue to see strong momentum, accelerating customer demand, and revenue growth across our strategic growth drivers, including Optical Networking within the AI data center, where our differentiated silicon photonics and silicon germanium technologies are driving meaningful value for our customers."

Recent Business Highlights

  • In July 2026, GF signed a letter of intent with the U.S. Department of Commerce for a $300 million award to accelerate U.S. silicon photonics leadership. Under the LOI, the Department's CHIPS Research and Development Office is expected to award GF $300 million to advance next-generation optical materials, wafer technologies and advanced packaging, reinforcing U.S. leadership in a technology essential to AI infrastructure.
  • In July 2026, GF completed the acquisition of Photeon Technologies' integrated voltage regulator (IVR) business, adding differentiated IVR technology, specialized engineering talent, and expanded R&D capabilities. The acquisition complements GF's existing BCD, GaN and integrated inductor technologies and expands the company's capabilities in power delivery solutions for AI data center applications.
  • In June 2026, GF completed its previously-announced acquisition of Synopsys' ARC Processor IP Solutions business, which together with MIPS brings together RISC-V processor IP, software tools, custom design and advanced manufacturing into a single offering. This acquisition further enables GF as a leader in RISC-V IP solutions and establishes the Company as a holistic technology partner, offering customers a software-to-silicon capability for Physical AI and beyond.

Story Continues

  • In May 2026, GF launched Quantum Technology Solutions (QTS), building upon over a decade of sustained investment in cryogenic CMOS, advanced packaging and materials science. Accelerated by an expected $375 million grant by the U.S. Department of Commerce, pursuant to a letter of intent, and supported by several of the leading quantum companies in the world, GF plans to manufacture at scale the complete hardware solutions that will power real-world quantum computing of the future.

Dividend Payment

On July 14 2026, GF paid its first-ever quarterly cash dividend of $0.12 per share. In addition, the Board of Directors has approved a dividend of $0.12 per share payable on October 9, 2026 to shareholders of record as of September 23, 2026.

(1)

The Guidance provided contains forward-looking statements as defined in the U.S. Private Securities Litigation Act of 1995, and is subject to the safe harbors created therein. The Guidance includes management's beliefs and assumptions and is based on information that is available as of the date of this release.

(2)

Non-IFRS gross margin, Non-IFRS operating expenses, Non-IFRS operating margin and Non-IFRS diluted EPS are Non-IFRS measures and, for purposes of the Guidance only, are defined as gross profit as a percent of revenue, operating expenses, operating profit as a percent of revenue, and diluted EPS, all before share-based compensation, respectively. See "Financial Measures (Non-IFRS)" for further discussion on these Non-IFRS measures and why we believe they are useful.

(3)

We expect share-based compensation of $18 million and $58 million in cost of revenue and operating expenses, respectively. The Non-IFRS margin impacts are calculated by dividing share-based compensation by net revenue, and the Non-IFRS diluted EPS impact is calculated by dividing share-based compensation by the fully diluted share count.

(4)

Included in IFRS and Non-IFRS diluted EPS is net interest income (expense) and other income (expense) which we estimate will be between $3 million and $11 million for the third quarter 2026. Also included in IFRS and Non-IFRS diluted EPS is income tax expense which we estimate will be between $28 million and $52 million for the third quarter 2026.

Financial Measures (Non-IFRS)

In addition to the financial information presented in accordance with International Financial Reporting Standards ("IFRS"), this press release includes the following Non-IFRS financial measures: Non-IFRS gross profit, Non-IFRS operating profit, Non-IFRS operating expense, Non-IFRS net income, Non-IFRS selling, general and administrative, Non-IFRS research and development, Non-IFRS other income (expense), Non-IFRS income tax benefit (expense), Non-IFRS diluted earnings per share ("EPS"), Non-IFRS adjusted EBITDA, Non-IFRS adjusted free cash flow, Non-IFRS total capital expenditures net of proceeds from government grants, and any related margins. We define each of Non-IFRS gross profit, Non-IFRS selling, general and administrative, Non-IFRS research and development, Non-IFRS operating profit, Non-IFRS other income (expense), Non-IFRS income tax benefit (expense) and Non-IFRS net income as gross profit, selling, general and administrative, research and development, operating profit, other income (expense), income tax benefit (expense), and net income (loss), respectively, adjusted for share-based compensation, structural optimization, amortization of acquired intangibles and other acquisition related charges, impairment charges, revaluation of equity investments, restructuring charges, litigation claims, tax matters, and any associated income tax effects. We define Non-IFRS operating expense as Non-IFRS gross profit minus Non-IFRS operating profit. We define Non-IFRS diluted EPS as Non-IFRS net income divided by the diluted shares outstanding. We define Non-IFRS adjusted free cash flow as cash flow provided by (used in) operating activities less purchases of property, plant and equipment and intangible assets plus proceeds from government grants related to capital expenditures. We define Non-IFRS total capital expenditures net of proceeds from government grant as purchases of property, plant and equipment and intangible assets less proceeds of government grants. We define Non-IFRS adjusted EBITDA as net income adjusted for the impact of finance expense, finance income, income tax expense (benefit), depreciation and amortization, share-based compensation, restructuring charges, impairment charges, revaluation of equity investments, structural optimization, litigation claims and acquisition related charges. We define each of Non-IFRS gross margin, Non-IFRS operating margin, Non-IFRS net income margin, Non-IFRS adjusted free cash flow margin and Non-IFRS adjusted EBITDA margin as Non-IFRS gross profit, Non-IFRS operating profit, Non-IFRS net income, Non-IFRS adjusted free cash flow and Non-IFRS adjusted EBITDA, respectively, divided by net revenue. Any adjustments described above that are zero for a given period are excluded from the "Reconciliation of IFRS to Non-IFRS" table. See "Reconciliation of IFRS to Non-IFRS" section for a detailed reconciliation of Non-IFRS financial measures to the most directly comparable IFRS measure.

We believe that in addition to our results determined in accordance with IFRS, these Non-IFRS financial measures provide useful information to both management and investors in measuring our financial performance and highlight trends in our business that may not otherwise be apparent when relying solely on IFRS measures. These Non-IFRS financial measures provide supplemental information regarding our operating performance that excludes certain gains, losses and non-cash charges that occur relatively infrequently and/or that we consider to be unrelated to our core operations. Management believes that Non-IFRS adjusted free cash flow as a Non-IFRS measure is helpful to investors as it provides insights into the nature and amount of cash the Company generates in the period.

Non-IFRS financial information is presented for supplemental informational purposes only and should not be considered in isolation or as a substitute for financial information presented in accordance with IFRS. Our presentation of Non-IFRS measures should not be construed as an inference that our future results will be unaffected by unusual or nonrecurring items. Other companies in our industry may calculate these measures differently, which may limit their usefulness as comparative measures.

(Bloomberg) -- A potential ban on the import of Chinese optical transceiver modules into the US would inflict collateral damage on US hyperscalers, exacerbating a supply bottleneck that no American firm can ease, research firm Counterpoint warned on Wednesday.

The proposed ban on Chinese optical modules would disrupt the hundreds of billions of dollars' worth of AI infrastructure that US firms are standing up in the country. The so-called hyperscalers, known for their extraordinary spending, like Amazon.com Inc. and Microsoft Corp., will face higher costs if Chinese optics suppliers are cut off, bringing about lower utilization of powerful and pricey AI accelerators, according to Counterpoint analyst Neil Shah.

"The belief that the optical transceiver market can be neatly divided geographically misinterprets how the hardware ecosystem operates," Shah said in a research note posted on Wednesday. "The global AI ecosystem remains heavily reliant on Chinese optical module vendors for scale execution."

The ban is targeting one of the very few areas of the global AI infrastructure dominated by Chinese companies, which according to Counterpoint holds nearly two thirds of the global supply of optical transceivers. Chinese firms including Zhongji Innolight Co. and Eoptolink Technology Inc. have an edge over western rivals in manufacturing at scale the high-precision modules essential to ensuring speedy transmission and data integrity within and across server racks.

Restricting Chinese components in US data centers would also come at the expense of other western firms in the AI infrastructure supply chain, Shah said. The optical transceivers made by Chinese firms integrates chips from Broadcom Inc. and Marvell Technology Inc., lasers and optical chips from Lumentum Holdings Inc. and Japan's Mitsubishi Electric Corp.

The initial report of a trade curb triggered a stock rout among Chinese optical firms, with Zhongji Innolight tanking as much as 14% on Wednesday. Its western rivals from Applied Optoelectronic Inc. and Coherent Corp. to Nokia Oyj rallied.

"While policy initiatives seek to insulate critical AI supply chains, sudden regulatory shifts risk creating hardware bottlenecks that could slow down deployment schedules for the world's largest cloud operators," Shah said, adding that suppliers in the West do not have the capabilities to absorb Innolight and Eoptolink's volume within the next year or two.

Circle Internet Group ( NYSE:CRCL ) stock dropped 2% after the company reported second-quarter results that beat earnings expectations but fell short on revenue. The mixed report has left me weighing stronger USDC adoption against continued competition in the stablecoin market.

Circle reported GAAP earnings of $0.18 per share, compared with a loss of $4.48 a year earlier. That was also slightly above the $0.17 consensus estimate. Revenue and reserve income totaled $701.32 million, up 6.6% year over year, but below the $712.5 million analyst forecast.

Investors are paying close attention to Circle's USDC growth because it remains a key measure of the company's business momentum. USDC in circulation reached $73.3 billion at the end of the quarter, up 19% from a year earlier, although that was below the $76.47 billion consensus estimate.

Circle also raised parts of its 2026 outlook. The company now expects other revenue of $310 million to $330 million, compared with its previous forecast of $150 million to $170 million. It also lifted its expected RLDC margin to 41.7% to 43.7%, while maintaining its longer-term target of 40% annualized growth in USDC circulation.

The bigger question is whether Circle can maintain that growth as competition increases. Open USD has emerged as a rival stablecoin, creating some pressure around USDC's future growth prospects.

At the same time, Circle's relationship with Coinbase could provide some support. The two companies are reportedly renewing their commercial partnership on the same terms, easing concerns that the agreement could change after Coinbase became involved with the Open USD consortium.

Ai chip by Quality Stock Arts via Shutterstock Marvell Technology (MRVL) has spent the past decade building chips that move, store, and process data for the world's biggest cloud companies. Now, the chipmaker is turning its attention to a problem that is slowing down artificial intelligence platforms.

As AI models grow bigger and chatbots hold longer conversations, the computers running them are running out of fast, accessible memory. Marvell says it has a plan to address this issue while accessing every layer of a data center, from a single server to an entire building.

Why AI Models Are Hitting a Memory Wall

Modern AI chatbots answer questions and remember every conversation. Every word a user types gets stored temporarily in something called a KV cache, short for key-value cache, so the AI can refer back to it.

The problem is that these caches are getting massive. Longer conversations, bigger AI models, and the rise of AI agents that complete multistep tasks on their own require more memory than a single server chip can hold.

When a processor has to wait for data because memory is full or too far away, it sits idle. Marvell calls this a GPU stall, and it's expensive. Marvell announced new products aimed at this bottleneck, and the lineup spans three levels of a data center.

  • At the individual server level, the company's new Bravera SC6 chip controls solid-state drives and helps move overflow data from memory out to storage twice as fast as its predecessor, according to the statement.
  • At the rack level, a product called Structera X lets cloud providers pool memory across multiple servers instead of locking it inside each machine. That means less memory sits unused while another server nearby runs short.
  • At the broadest level, Marvell's Photonic Fabric technology uses light instead of electrical signals to link memory across racks up to 50 meters apart.

This setup can offload up to 32 terabytes of cached data and deliver two to three times more AI output within the same power budget.

"AI infrastructure is moving beyond isolated servers to systems where compute, memory and connectivity operate seamlessly together," said Will Chu, executive vice president and general manager of custom cloud solutions at Marvell, in the statement. "As AI scales, memory must scale more independently of compute so resources can be deployed where they deliver the greatest value."

Story Continues

Alan Weckel, co-founder and technology analyst at 650 Group, echoed that view. "Marvell's memory and storage portfolio gives hyperscalers and cloud providers a strong foundation for building scalable, efficient AI systems capable of supporting increasingly advanced workloads," he said.

Marvell Grows at a Steady Pace

The memory push builds on a data center business that is expanding rapidly. During a June 2 appearance at the Evercore Global TMT Conference, Marvell CFO Willem Meintjes said the company raised its current year revenue outlook to $11.5 billion and its outlook for next year to $16.5 billion, up from earlier targets of $10 billion and $13 billion.

Marvell's interconnect business, the chips that move data between servers, is growing more than 70% this year, Senior Vice President of Investor Relations Ashish Saran said on the same call.

CEO Matt Murphy, speaking a day earlier at the Bank of America Global Technology Conference, said the company's custom silicon business, which designs specialized chips for individual cloud customers, is on pace to more than double next year.

Murphy also pointed to memory-adjacent products, including CXL controllers that expand server memory and network cards tied to AI processors, as a fast-growing part of that business. These product lines line up directly with the new memory tools Marvell just introduced.

What It Means for MRVL Stock

Marvell said the Bravera SC6 chip is expected to begin sampling with customers in the fourth quarter of 2026. Still, the timing lines up with what Marvell executives have described on recent investor calls as a shift in AI spending, from simply buying more processors to building smarter systems around them.

If memory bottlenecks are really holding back AI performance the way Marvell claims, cloud companies have a financial reason to pay attention, since it directly affects how many AI answers they can generate for every dollar spent on power and hardware.

Marvell separately announced plans in late July to invest $250 million in India over three years, expanding engineering teams in Bangalore and Hyderabad that work on advanced chip design.

Analysts tracking MRVL stock forecast revenue to increase from $8.19 billion in fiscal 2026 (ended in January) to $41.4 billion in fiscal 2031. In this period, adjusted earnings per share are projected to expand from $2.84 to $17.40. If the tech stock is priced at 25x forward earnings, it could double within the next four years.

Out of the 35 analysts covering MRVL stock, 25 recommend "Strong Buy," three recommend "Moderate Buy," and seven recommend "Hold." The average MRVL price target is $263.06, above the current price of about $219.
